British Championships 2017
Long distance race
Congratulations to Bill Vigar M80 for finishing runner up in the British Orienteering Championships in the Lake District. Runners had to master the challenges posed by the mixed forest and open areas of High Dam posed but were blessed with fine weather.

Streets, parkland & an ancient forest
Forty QO and JOG members headed to an event outside our county this Sunday! There was an abundance of action: the junior team event at Savernake, an urban race at Amesbury and a Devon League event within the National Trust grounds at Knightshayes.

Easter weekend
Several QO members ran at the Jan Kjellstrom International Festival of Orienteering or the JK as it's known. The late Easter and southern climes meant lovely spring sunshine, in contrast to some recent JKs! We even mustered a relay team on Easter Monday.

Weekend of 8/9 April
The panoramic parkland of Trelissick in Cornwalland the steep hillside of Painswick Beacon in North Gloucester were good options for orienteers locally in the weekend just gone. There was a very close contest at the Trelissick event....
National news
from BOF
Amongst the issues that the latest bulletin from British Orienteering (BOF) focuses on are the continued pitfalls associated with putting on major events such as next weekend's JK. Also outlined in the chief executive's e-news is the new format of BOF's new website, due to go live in late April.

The evening began with a warm up led by Tess and Angela. This was followed by a Clock Relay in French Weir Park and the Presentation of Certificates and Trophies in the COACH Building by QO President Mike Crockett.

Weekend of 25/26 March
Nine QO & JOG members headed down to River Dart Country Park on a warm and pleasant Sunday to tackle this steep sided wood grafted onto landscaped parkland. The previous day at JOG on Henlade Hill, seniors and older juniors were treated to a memory map exercise.

The course planners Graham and Brian Pearson made us work up a sweat in warm early spring weather this Saturday, taking us some of us round this lovely little wood once, twice or three times depending on which course you were running
Club Night
Mapping and use of GPS
At our latest club night on Thursday (23rd), we focussed on mapping and using GPS. Andy Rimes and Jim Mallinson gave an overview of the surveying and mapping process and the associated challenges, showed as the tools we have at our disposal as a club and took questions from the floor.

Weekend of 18/19 March
The National Arboretum is ablaze with autumn colours one season. The next it's ablaze with the gaudy nylon sported by gurning orienteers, zipping up and down the tracks there. Several members travelled up to Gloucestershire to take part. Closer to home, we had training at Crowcombe Heathfield.

Full steam ahead
The penultimate junior event of the season saw us at an established forest league venue overlooked by the Quantocks. The tooting steam trains arriving and departing from the vintage station nearby always lends something to the atmosphere...full steam ahead, JOGgers!
Juniors at Compass Sport Trophy
Good results in Dorset
Several of our juniors put in excellent performances at the Compass Sport Trophy at Moors Valley Country Park, near Ringwood on Sunday 12 March. We also had a good number of younger juniors doing well in the White and Yellow courses.
