Happy Christmas
Happy Christmas from Quantock Orienteers. Hope you got all sorts of nice orienteering-related presents.
Some families have been sending in photos of children wearing club snoods...
JOG Spring 2021
As we are now in Lockdown, we are unable to arrange events. However, we are able to provide additional permanent orienteering courses. We'll be providing them in the normal JOG courses - Hare, Squirrel, Badger, and Fox. As they become available, they will appear on our POC page.
Uncrossable Boundaries
The recent Longrun JOG threw up a point about uncrossable boundaries. As so many were caught out by this, and earned a time penalty as a result, I thought it would be sensible to highlight this. In a more serious competition, disqualification would be the likely result of an infringment.
Supporting Mental Health
Although these tips are aimed at young athletes in training programmes, many parts of the advice apply to us all.
Organisers Conference
SWOA will be holding a virtual conference on 23 January 2021 for event organisers to discuss ways to conduct events within the letter and spirit of the British Orienteering guidance.
The Current Situation
Orienteering during Lockdown 2.0
As of writing this on the morning of 7 November, the government is allowing people to travel a short distance to do outdoor exercise. In fact, outdoor exercise is actively encouraged as long as you do it solo, with members of your household/support bubble, or as two individuals from different households.
British Orienteering has confirmed that in line with this, clubs can still put on events as long as they do not involve needing to meet up, are virtual (e.g. MapRun), and are open for at least 7 days (to reduce risk of crowding).
Hallowe'en Orienteering
Instead of trick or treating this evening, the Shaws and MacAlisters went night orienteering. It was a score course with a difference - each control site had a bag of goodies (the harder the control to find, the better the selection of chocolates and sweets). The first pair to reach each control got to collect the bag!
Family Fun
Orienteering Together
Its great that so many families are managing to get out and go orienteering, despite the recent weather.
November is Urban Month
We have plenty of urban events planned in Taunton for November 2020, from JOGs to a Southern England league event.
Event safety
Free online course
Calling all current and prospective event organisers and planners! The national O body is running a course, which remains free till the year end.
JOG Autumn 2020
This'll be an interesting season with all the Covid restrictions, but should still be fun.
Read on for fixtures and how it will all work...
New members
A warm welcome to...
The Tilley family, Joanna, Daimon and Olly of Wiveliscombe. The Tilleys have taken in two of our first three virtual junior events, running first at Vivary Park then making their way up to Lydeard Hill.
Club Championships 2020
A quick review
On Sunday, QO members descended on Longrun Meadow and French Weir Park for the annual club championships.
Virtual AGM
QO members should by now have received an email explaining about the Virtual AGM. If you haven't got it, please check your spam/junk folders as it contains your voting 'slip'.
