Events round-up

Weekend of 18/19 March

Published: Sun 19 Mar 2017

The National Arboretum is ablaze with autumn colours one season. The next it's ablaze with the gaudy nylon sported by gurning orienteers, zipping up and down the tracks there. Several members travelled up to Gloucestershire to take part. Closer to home, we had training at Crowcombe Heathfield.

Results analysis

On Sunday, BOK hosted an event in Westonbrit Arboretum, at which several QO members ran; one of whom, Peter Shirvington, came 5th on the blue course. He did this in a time of 51:59, just 07:51 behind the winner, and on the way to control 4, he took the fastest time getting to that control. Unfortunately most of his time lost was on the way to either the first or eleventh controls. Overall this event was attended by a good half dozen QO members.

Routes & ranking points

Peter actually managed to beat a few runners who are classed by BOF as being in the UK top 500. Those rankings are based on the BOF rankings points they have accumulated over the last 12 months and which another Peter also enjoying a fine run, Pete Akers, refers to below.

An excerpt is pictured from his run and that of a top runner on his course (Green) as recorded on Routegadget. Pete said:

"For once my route was careful and relatively straight, making what I still think was good use of paths, whilst the 'top runner' (whose route is also shown) was sometimes all over the place. He still beat me though - anyway, according to BOF that was my best run ever!"

Well done both Petes.

Training at Crowcombe Heathfield

The Fox course was linear affair this week and again a good number attempted it, with just enough maps to go round.

The craters and gorges to the south of the area provided added navigational interest! For the rest of the report see JOG at Crowcombe Heathfield
