Meet our new Chair
Many of you will by now know that the club has a new chairman in Alasdair Shaw. Orienteering is just one of many outdoor sports Alasdair has been involved in. Below he tells us a little bit more about himself.
Organising & safety courses
Review
Good use was made of the Organiser and Safety Courses put on by QO and SWOA at the weekend, with seven club members gaining certificates and several more there to share their experiences.
Roger Craddock reports.
All change at the top
AGM
After the Club Championships at Ham Hill on 31 August about 50 people dropped down to the Lord Nelson Inn at Norton-sub-Hamdon, with half staying on for the AGM.
Newly elected club president Roger Craddock reports on AGM - and a change at the top.
President's Challenge
Prizes on offer
With this weekend's forest league event having been cancelled, newly installed club president Roger Craddock has an alternative competition for club members this weekend.
Prizes will be awarded for the top senior and top junior.
There's just a couple of catches...
Four Days of Limburg
Dutch/Belgian tournament
Seasoned O travellers Andy Rimes and Rosie Wych saught out fresh terrain in the Low Countries...and of course the chance to add another souvenir O top to their collections.
Amazingly, the intriguing series of inland dune areas over there might not be used again - Andy and Rosie report.
Indoor O
Bradford Grammar School
A format that's big in Scandanavia and most obviously of use when there's a whiteout in the forests! Pete and Jacob Shirvington and Martin Lewis tried it out during their grand O tour of Yorkshire. Pete reports.
Scottish 6 Days
Review
The 2019 tournament was enjoyed by many, with fabulous weather, a nice mix of venues and formats and great organisation. For those seeking a flavour of the series, the official website (link) contains video coverage of the action, links to photographs plus Routegadget (here).
Organising events
Courses
We're running both an introductory organiser's course and an event safety course. The venue is in Taunton on Saturday 7 September. To register your interest, please contact Roger & Judy Craddock.
We need more attending to make these courses viable, so please don't hesitate in signing up!
Urban events
Fast Bucks
The Lewis family ran at the Buckingham event on Sunday 11 August, the latest in the Southern England urban league (SEOUL). Oliver was runner up on his course, in a field of nine. Martin, Issy and Annabelle also went.
Race the Castles
Yorkshire
Three QO, Martin Lewis plus Pete and Jacob Shirvington enjoyed a grand tour of Yorkshire in mid August. A bit of poetic licence is being applied to the series name by the organisers though on Wednesday evening there actually was a race round a castle!
Startrack Programme
at Taunton Athletics Club
Each summer,Taunton AC run a week-long programme for those schoolchildren aged 8 to 15 with an interest in athletics. QO were tasked with introducing orienteering to those children on one of those days.
Vikki Page reports.
Slovenian 5 days
Andy Rimes and Rosie Wych coped well with some highly technical orienteering in the Julian Alps of Slovenia at the end of July. An abundance of contour and rock features and general absence of paths or other line features made for a tough challenge.
