Cothelstone South

JOG7

Sat 25 Mar

Near: Cothelstone
Level of event: Activity

Type of event: Training, Juniors

The area is steep woodland with more line features recently added. Some steep crags will be taped with warning tape.

The area is in part used by walkers, dog walkers, riders, and MTBers, although not that much used.

The area is quite tranquil. It is possible to see and hear ravens, as well as spot roe deer if you are lucky [and quiet!]. If you have time to stop then there are lovely views across to Exmoor.

The area on the map marked out of bounds must be respected as there are the remains of small-scale quarrying. Hare, Squirrel, and Badger should stick to paths and tracks.

There are lots of well defined paths to use; however, the height gains will help improve your fitness.

The Fox course has a lot of climb with well defined on path features on your ascent; however, your descent navigation will be more challenging – especially when oxygen starved…Take care on the clear fell - a case of more haste and less speed.

Course Information

We cater from beginners through to a good club standard. We call the courses Hare, Squirrel, Badger, and Fox and these offer a clear progression in the difficulty level. The Fox course usually incorporates adult training exercises.

Hare to Badger usually uses PIN punching, and sometimes also the option of QR code punching using your smartphone. The latter has the training benefit of the GPS tracks automatically being added to Routegadget for post-run analysis. Fox is sometimes PIN/QR punching and sometimes GPS punching. The latter is also automatically uploaded to Routegadget.
