A good way to start a new Junior Orienteering Group (JOG) term is an event in a public space like Vivary Park in Taunton.
In addition to the 40 competitors there were enquiries and interest from others in the Park.
Emily Macpherson and Sue Toomer provided safe but challenging courses within the park and Ray Toomer set up the Fox course as a Maprun GPS course that included the wider Wilton area.
A good turnout of juniors used the Squirrel course to increase their confidence and navigational skills. Sue awarded certificates and badges for last term’s JOG League as well as several skills badges
Many thanks to all the volunteers that enabled the event and the participants for supporting it. The next JOG is at Netherclay on 31st January, see the website for more details.

Nr Fons George car park - please note a fee is required for the public car park
Hare 1.2km, Squirrel 1.4km, Badger 3.5km. Fox is a MapRun course. Fox runners - we advise downloading the event from Maprun to your phone whilst at home on your wifi. No unaccompanied juniors on Fox course which will extend into the urban area outside the park.
We cater from beginners through to a good club standard. We call the courses Hare, Squirrel, Badger, and Fox and these offer a clear progression in the difficulty level.
Hare to Badger uses PIN punching. Fox is GPS punching using MapRun. The latter is also automatically uploaded to Routegadget.
Please note that pre-entries close at midnight the Tuesday before as we need to know entry numbers for map printing purposes. Entry on the day will be available but there will be limited map numbers so pre-entry is strongly advised to avoid disappointment.
Please consider buying a pack of pre-entry credits in advance. This costs you the same but saves the club a lot in credit card fees.
Starts from 1.30pm. No starts after 2.30pm. Controls collected 3pm.
Terrain is flat, paths and fields. Hare and Squirrel would be a good opportunity for children to have a go on their own.
Dogs allowed on lead
There are toilets on site.
