Comments from organisers Hazel and Linda:
At the beginning of the week the weather forecast was threatening thunderstorms for Saturday and there were very low entry numbers. However, Saturday afternoon came and we had a lovely dry, sunny day and a great turn out of JOGgers. Everyone came back from their courses looking warm and pleased with their runs. Some made the most of the nice afternoon and went out for additional runs and everyone stayed around for a while comparing route choices. Thanks to Sheila for planning and to Mark for controlling. It was also nice to see Judy and Roger back at JOG with time to catch up with everyone.
Our Junior Orienteering Group (JOG) runs during term times holding low-key weekly events aimed at juniors, families, and all those looking to improve or train. Newcomers are always welcome.
Non-members are very welcome. If you like it and want to join, read about joining QO here.
Limited parking for cars on the lane with Silk Mills Park and Ride within easy walking distance. Please take care crossing the road and ensure juniors accompanied by appropriate adult to and from parking areas.
We cater from beginners through to a good club standard. We call the courses Hare, Squirrel, Badger, and Fox and these offer a clear progression in the difficulty level. The Fox course usually incorporates adult training exercises.
Courses for juniors remain within the low lying and level confined area of Netherclay Community Woodland with course lengths as follows:
- Hare: 1.0 km
- Squirrel: 1.5 km
- Badger: 2.3 km
Fox: 4.2km Netherclay Commmunity Woodland area extending to Bishops Hull village including some limited climb and road crossings. Over 16s only or juniors accompanied at all times by an appropriate adult.
River Tone can be fast flowing and deep, with unstable banks. Ground may be uneven in places and muddy after wet weather. Footbridge over river is OOB (see map) please do not use to cross river here.
Please note that pre-entries close at midnight Tuesday 1st October as we need to know entry numbers for map printing purposes. Entry on the day will be available but there will be limited map numbers so pre-entry is strongly advised to avoid disappointment.
Starts at 1.30pm - 2:30pm, with controls being collected in from 3pm.
Dogs allowed on leads
Netherclay Community Woodland is an area of wooded and hedge-rowed pasture land on the banks of the River Tone planted with oak, ash, elm, wild cherry and blackthorn with great woodland and riverside wildlife. Look out for brown hairstreak butterflies, willow warblers, bullfinch, otters and kingfishers.
