Thank you everyone for coming to Ramscombe this weekend! UPDATED: with organiser comments.
Organiser comments:
Our last event in Great Wood was on the tail end of Storm Bert and those who stuck it out all got soaked! This time we enjoyed some pleasant late summer sunshine. But it was still good to have the indoor facilities though, it made life much simpler.
I didn't get out there myself, but sounds like you had a good time on our steep hills. My thanks to Mike and Damian for producing some great courses. This was Mike's first time planning at Regional level, so well done to him for volunteering to take this on. Also thanks to the rest of the helper team, especially those who did a long day.
Those who stayed on at the end will be aware there was a car accident, but fortunately no-one was hurt and everyone got home safe. It's been reported to BOF and FE and hopefully insurance will take care of everything.
Our next race at Ramscombe will be the Southern Championships and without giving too much away we'll be focussing the courses on a slightly different area.

Our league events are open to all, beginner or experienced orienteer, young or old and there are colour-coded courses suitable for all.
We have six of these events a year and together they form the Forest League (QOFL). The series starts in the Autumn and continues at approximately one event per month until the spring.
Please note that all our league events will be Regional events (Level C).
Anyone can get a result for an event, but for it to be included in the league scoring you have to be a member of a British Orienteering affiliated club at the time of entry.
Please make sure you have read and comply with the Participant Code Of Conduct and, if applicable, the Parent Code Of Conduct.
Parking will be on forest roads near the start.
Parking fees are £3 per car all day. This is not part of the entry fee and is not collected by QO.
Course | Controls | Length | Climb |
---|---|---|---|
White | 8 | 1.3 km | 65 m |
Yellow | 9 | 2.1 km | 90 m |
Orange | 9 | 2.5 km | 110 m |
Light Green | 12 | 2.9 km | 145 m |
Short Green | 12 | 3.2 km | 145 m |
Green | 12 | 4.2 km | 250 m |
Blue | 17 | 6.0 km | 320 m |
Brown | 22 | 7.7 km | 320 m |
All the above are subject to final controlling.
Ramscombe is very hilly. There are steep slopes on all courses, including a steep descent on Light Green, Short Green, Green, Blue and Brown courses.
No courses cross public roads, which will be marked out of bounds. If you encounter a public road you are about to run off the map!
Class | Pre-entry | Late / On the day entry |
---|---|---|
Senior | £10 | £12 |
Senior Novice | £5 | £6 |
Junior | £5 | £6 |
Group | £7 | £9 |
A standard SI dibber can be hired for free (or £2 for a contactless SIAC dibber). Failure to return it will incur the cost of a replacement (£30 for SI, £60 for SIAC).
As there is no mobile signal in the forest, on the day entry will be cash only.
Pre-entry closes at 23:59 on Sunday 21st September so we can print the right number of maps. After that, please enter on the day. We will print extras so we are very unlikely to run out of maps, but please note that if you enter on the day you run the risk that we have run out of maps for your preferred course.
Please consider buying a pack of pre-entry credits in advance. This costs you the same but saves the club a lot in credit card fees.
Registration from: 10:30 (helpers from 10.00)
Start times from: 11.00 to 13.00 (helpers can start from 10.30)
Courses close: 14:30
At 14:00 there will be a presentation of trophies to the winners of last year's South West League. Please stay and give them a cheer.
Dogs are allowed on the courses, but under close control and well-behaved please. This is due to ponies, deer and other forest users in the event area.
There is a public toilet block at registration.
Safety Notes
Please note that all courses include steep slopes and steep rocky paths. Less agile competitors may find the terrain difficult.
There is no mobile phone signal in most of the forest including the parking areas and event registration, so please do not rely on your mobile. You will not be able to contact the organising team by mobile on the day. Please carry a whistle for use in an emergency. (Six blasts repeated every minute is the signal to call for help).
The forest is popular with other recreation users including easily startled horse riders and fast downhill mountain bikers. Please take care and be courteous. You will probably encounter people including fellow orienteers on the forest roads so please drive carefully.
Full length leggings or long trousers are mandatory, and please check yourself for ticks after the event due to the risk of Lyme disease. The area is home to large deer herds, which is what the ticks are after but they will happily feed on you instead!
There are also many anthills in the forest. Please avoid them.
Please dress appropriately for the weather, including warm dry clothing for later.
If foul weather is forecast we may have to cancel. If in doubt, please check before travelling. The officials will try to announce any cancellation decision approximately 24 hours in advance.
