Now that the QO orienteering season has come to an end, you might be feeling a little twitchy with no orienteering in the calendar until September. 5 months is a long time…. The good news is that there is still plenty going on only a short distance away.

BOK’s urban series – from 27th April

Starting on Wednesday 27th April at Bristol University, BOK’s urban series comprises 12 events nearly weekly through to July. There are short, medium and long courses, with the short courses often suitable for juniors unaccompanied. Whilst some of the events are on the other side of Bristol, many of them are fairly convenient for QOs.

If you are interested in taking part in even some of the events, you might be able to arrange a lift share to keep costs down.

Yvette Baker Trophy Heat - Wavering Down – 8th May

Just half an hour up the M5 from Taunton, this side of The Mendips at Wavering Down, BOK is hosting the Yvette Baker Trophy Heat (the junior inter-club competition heat). The more of our juniors that can take part, the better chance we have, and Pete, our Club Captain, will be getting in touch soon.

With or without young people, there are coloured courses up to Brown suitable for all ages and abilities.

Knightshayes World Orienteering Day Event – 15th May

To celebrate World Orienteering Day, Devon is putting on a local event at Knightshayes National Trust Estate, half an hour south on M5 from Taunton. There are short, medium and long courses across the fast open parkland – so something for everyone.

Tamar Triple – 3rd June – 5th June

Need an excuse for a long weekend in Devon or Cornwall? Devon Orienteering Club and KERNO are hosting their biannual weekend of Orienteering at the end of the Summer half term.

The weekend consists of an urban event at Tavistock (part of the South England Urban League), a long-distance event on Leskernick Hill in Bodmin, and a middle distance event on Mt Edgcumbe overlooking Plymouth Sound.

All the events have courses suitable for Juniors and adults of all abilities.

Quantocks Challenge

Later in the Summer, we are again putting on our 3 hours (short) and 5 hours (long) challenge score course covering a huge area of The Quantocks. Get some practice in now (and have a nice day out on The Quantocks) by having a go at last year’s courses: https://www.goorienteering.org.uk/course/quantock-challenge-2021

Permanent orienteering courses

There are a load of permanent orienteering courses throughout Somerset that you can have a go at when it is convenient to you and at your own pace. Permanent orienteering courses are great for families as well as individual orienteers. They allow you to get out into nature, focus on your exercise, and develop your navigation.
