Fancy another run up at St Audries? OK, a virtual run. Have you tried out Steve Robertson's photo-O challenge? The terrain looked a little different over the summer when the event was being planned- not quite as runnable!

Basic map

Basic map

We had fun attempting this armchair challenge at a club night. For those of you who didn't experience it, or want to have another go, here it is! The solution will appear in due course- if there's any demand for it!- along with accompanying notes on useful techniques.

The puzzle is based on a similar format to the annual Photo O puzzle set by a national orienteering magazine.

The aim is to locate the controls on the map, using the clues in the photographs and the control descriptions, shown on both a card (all together) and at the top of each photo. Print the map and the control descriptions, then off you go.

Bonus points are awarded for calculating the course length and climb once your done. But no conferring with those who saw this puzzle at club night! The solution will be given out again in due course.

Notes

For those who have attempted the CompassSport photo O before, the differences between that puzzle and this one are:

  1. the control code is not a bearing (i.e. of the flag from the camera)
  2. the orientation of the Start triangle gives no clues as to the direction of the first control, as it normally would
  3. the distance to the finish is not given
