January Weekend of Orienteering
The weekend of 28-29/1/23 brings a UKUL event in Taunton and a QOFL event on the Quantocks. We look forward to welcoming orienteers from across the country to join us in celebrating our wonderful sport.
28/1/23 - UK Urban League
Using a newly-extended Taunton map, this will be a great mix of residential streets, business districts, and urban parkland. Junior courses will be entirely within traffic-free areas.
We'll have age-graded courses covering the standard classes.
29/1/23 - Quantock Orienteers Forest League
The Quantocks North area provides a great taster of Quantocks orienteering. Open moorland and steep wooded valleys combine to challenge everyone.
We'll have colour-coded courses from white to blue.
28-29/1/23 - A Little Bit More
If that's not enough for you, we have reopened one of our Street Series courses from a few years ago. It starts and finishes in the Hankridge Farm Retail Park just next to Jn25 of the M5.
A 50 minute score course, you have the choice of Long (odds/evens blocks) or Short (any order).
For this weekend it will be a self-serve thing - download the map from the BOF POC site, print it, and track your run on MapRun.
Other Permanent Orienteering Courses
We have a nice range of physical and virtual POCs in our area. Several have starts only a minute's walk from the UKUL registration area. If you're new to orienteering, why not give a POC a try and see if you like it?
About Orienteering
Orienteering is a challenging outdoor adventure sport. The aim is to navigate between control points marked on a special orienteering map and decide the best route to complete the course in the quickest time. It does not matter how young, old or fit you are, as you can run, walk or jog the course and progress at your own pace.
There are many physical and mental health benefits of orienteering:
- balance between mind and body
- promotes self reliance
- sharpens decision-making skills
- helps develop good ways of thinking under pressure
- increases muscular fitness
- increases cardiovascular capacity
- gets you out into nature
- improves self-esteem
- you become part of a supportive community
