Events & training round up
Weekend 4/5 February
The Forest of Dean again played host to a top quality event and a few QO members on Sunday, this time it was a middle distance race at New Beechenhurst. The previous day at JOG, several seniors in attendance had a go at the map memory exercise with Spencer Modica excelling.
Planner Jim Mallinson asked those training to memorise the locations of 20 controls before finding them. You could return to base to view the map as many times as you wanted- but you couldn't take it with you! Plus there were decoy controls out there to fool you. Ten people had a go.
JOGs are attracting a real range of ages and abilities these days and the gender balance is more equal than at our senior events. Thanks to all those who make them happen.
The Bristol club's Forest of Dean event took advantage of some complex remnants of the mining industry there. The New Beechenhurst terrain suited the middle distance format, which means shorter legs. The Black course centred around two intricate areas with contour and point features- see the map excerpts from Jeff Pakes' Routegadget. Note the error after #18, misjudging where the path junction was and retracing steps. A bit of a headless chicken moment after negotiating a series of zig zagging legs then going into oxygen deficit after climbing a steep spur!
Forthcoming fixtures
After Saturday's JOG at Queen's College, there is the Wessex Galoppen in the New Forestis on Sunday. The following Sunday is our fifth QOFL of the season at Lydeard Hill.
