Events & training review
Weekend of 4/5 March
A fabulous weekend of orienteering was on offer, with members heading off at all points of the compass. Close to home on Saturday was training at the ever lovely Fyne Court. Meanwhile, seven of us hit the warrens and sand dunes of South Wales for the weekend and others headed east to Font Hill.
QO training, Fyne Court
On Saturday, Jim Nickolls planned the JOG in and around the beautiful National Trust property. The Fox course was planned as a longer course, exploring the eastern parts of the valley, as well as several of the hilltops. See the image gallery below for photos taken on the day.
Sarum Saunter, Font Hill
On Sunday, several QO members attended this district event, including Brian Fletcher who won the Short Blue course in 39 minutes with a winning margin of more than 6 minutes over the runner-up. Brian was the fastest person on the majority of his legs. Also present were the Green family, with the entire family running a course and Heather Green doing well on her Orange course. Christopher and Robert did the Green course along with Pete Akers, whose route is pictured.
Welsh Champs, Merthyr Mawr
A torrential downpour was forecast for Sunday, but many were lucky enough to have raindrop free runs. Maybe not error free runs though, such is the challenge on the fiendishly labyrinth warrens and dunes.
Most of the seven QO members attending acquitted themselves very well. Bill Vigar won the M80 class ahead of Tony Noot of BOK on the Saturday. Jim Mallinson (QO & SLOW) was 3rd out of 12 on the Saturday and just 2 minutes of second place. Jeff Pakes was 5th out of the 10 M45s competing and Andy Rimes 6th of the dozen-strong M50 class.
In echoes of another small club who recently put on a big event, Swansea Bay OC also had an army competition running alongside their weekend of orienteering.
