From Portugal to Dartmoor
Recent events
Andy Rimes and Rosie Wych took in a four day tournament in warm weather in the south of Portugal before cooling down at Devon's event on Dartmoor the following weekend, along with a dozen of our members.
Report from Portugal, by Rob Parkinson of Devon OC
Andy and Rosie were up against a mixture of stiff international competition... and those orienteers who just fancied a holiday. It was a four day tournament, with an urban race followed by two long distance races and a middle distance one.
Rosie started off brilliantly. In the sprint at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Evora, she finished 15 out of nearly 70 in her W60 age group category. She couldn't better that but overall overall came a very good 24th out of 69.
Andy came 66th out of more than 100 in the M55 class, in which Bristol OK's Clive Hallett finished runner up overall.
Moors League Event, Houndstor
Andy now finds himself third overall after his latest run in Devon OC's winter series, which continued at Houndstor, adjacent to Hay Tor, both venues familiar to many QO members from recent summer relays.
Martin Lewis recorded yet another runners-up finish on Light Green, this time getting within five minutes of the winner. He beat one of the Griersons on the way, even if it was 'only' the dad Peter rather than one of the super-fast youngsters!
Adele Appleby's top half finish on Green bodes well for her forthcoming appearance at the JK. Tony Hext got round in just 48 minutes and was 8th out of 24. John Fisher had a creditable run in a rare excursion out of QO territory.
