Croydon Hill Regional Event - Controllers Comments:

I think the other two officials have said it all. We were on tenterhooks over the 10 days leading up to the event, watching all the weather forecasts and consulting with our inside man in the Met Office. The decision was only taken late on Wednesday, and even then with the caveat for everyone to consult the QO website before travelling. In the end, it was as good a day as could be expected for the time of year. Shame about the wet underfoot; and those slopes......

I think this was the most physically demanding terrain I've been involved with as an official, with lots of climb on even the shortest courses. I'm pleased I used the BOF recommended guide of 0.1km for every 10m of climb. As Andy says, this reduced all of the course lengths by a considerable amount, and I was a little concerned that there might be some complaints about the shortness of courses compared to those we usually face. However, I think the times on each course show that we made the right decision. As usual the leading runners flew around, but I think we also have to consider the proficiency and fitness of the whole field. The aim should be for every competitor to come away with a sense of satisfaction and a warm feeling. I hope we achieved that. Well done to QO for a good event, and in particular to Andy Rimes, Richard Sansbury and Bill Vigor for putting up with my nitpicking.
