Quantock Orienteers was founded in 1969 by, among others, John Pilkington, who is still an active member of the Club. There are currently approximately 100 people in the club and they range in age from 2 to nearly 80. The club has no central club house but meets at the various events that are put on around the South West and/or further afield for the more enthusiastic.
The Club puts on approximately 8 events a year from the local league to Regional Badge events and all Club members take a turn at helping; those who help are entitled to a 50% reduction in fees.Local events are held all over Somerset including the Quantocks, the Northern Edge of the Blackdowns, Ham Hill and Blackborough. All these areas have been specially mapped for Orienteering and they range in scale from 1:7,500 to 1:15,000. All QO's mapping is done by Bill Vigar who is our local expert on surveying and cartography.
If you want to Orienteer then you do need transport but other than that the cost is very reasonable. All clubs that put on events aim to cover their costs put a bit by for future expenses such as new maps, Orienteering equipment. Depending on the size of the event we charge between £2.50 and £6.00 for adults and £1.50 and £3.00 for juniors.
The Club always has members varying in standard from absolute beginners to ex/current British Champions all of whom work together to make our events and the sport an enjoyable experience for all. We are always looking for new members of all ages and no one is too young or too old. If you are interested in joining then you can get details on our contact page.
