Coach Tess Stone has the following message for those thinking of going along for the final sessions on Thursday 19 July at Castle Neroche. Basically, bring some food for the coals and be prepared for some relay team action!

Last Training week before our social on the final Thursday (ALL WELCOME)

We will be working in the woods mostly where there are some good brown features. We have worked on feature recognition (and how it is mapped/options of mapping), distance estimation, knowing the scale on your map and the distance this represents on the ground, pacing, route choice, and attach points/catching features. This last week we will bring it all together with a bit more short map memory exercises in the cool of the woods.

It has been great being in the shade of some beautiful woods during this summer of hot weather. We have varied the nature of the runs to balance with the ambient temperature of the woods and the balance of the group!! We seemed to have cleverly followed the wild flowing season too getting the best of each area in turn; from blue bells at Castle Neroche to birds-foot trefoil, yellow rattle and orchids, at Thurlbear to red clover self heal and knapweed now at Buckland Quants! We have also been lucky with how it has worked out with the vegetation growth ...mostly choosing wisely and learning from last year, having the runnable areas at the beginning of the summer that get covered with bracken later and then the good path network and beautiful rides followed by open and dark woods later on. Although frustratingly the bramble has become more significant in the open at Quants.
