Review of 2022/23

Hazel gives us a review of last year's street series and how she got on with MapRun:

For the 2022-2023 Street Series, I have been using MapRunF. As I have only started doing Street Series this season, it is the first time I’ve used MapRun at night and for anything more than just a JOG or the Quantock Challenge. I chose to run the Short course at each event.

Street Series 1 - Bishops Lydeard

This was the first ever Street Series that I had taken part in. I was a bit unsure of where to go first, as the map was very different to the maps I am used to i.e. non-urban maps, however I soon started to work it out as I went. Personally, I didn’t have a problem with the controls and they nearly all went off as expected. The only one I did have a slight problem with, and many other Orienteers had the same issue, was that one control was the far side of a temporary metal fence which we couldn't cross! The control’s radius was not big enough to be able to reach to where we could get to, but we were still awarded the points as you can see your route on MapRun after the end of the run.

Street Series 2 - Hankridge

This Street Series took place in a very cold spell when the temperature was around -6 degrees! Although almost fully charged, my phone decided it was too cold with the battery running down completely in around half hour. Due to getting far too cold myself, I didn’t have a good run and headed back to the finish early. When I went back onto MapRun at a later date, it did give me the option to resume my run which I wasn’t expecting, but unfortunately couldn’t continue it as I needed MapRun for another course first. I hope to have another go at this course soon though.

Street Series 3 - Bishops Hull

I had a really good run at this one and all the controls went off as I was expecting. I was slightly nervous about running this one due to getting so cold at the last one, but had a good run and was pleased with how it had gone and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Street Series 4 - Wiveliscombe

Another successful MapRun course. Although I didn’t run this course, I had a nice walk around and once again, no problems with MapRun.

Street Series 5 - Somerton

There were a lot more controls for this course and no obvious route, so I kept changing my mind part way round the course trying to maximise my score. I started off by going out into the fields and collecting some higher scoring controls before then collecting what I could in the remaining time round the streets as I gradually headed back. Unfortunately I was 12 seconds late back, leading to a time penalty. Again, I had no problems with MapRun and all worked well.

Many thanks to all the planners and helpers for another successful set of events and allowing them to happen and a big thank you to Judy and Roger for all they continue to do for Quantock Orienteers.
