Yvette Baker Final

QO were represented at the Yvette Baker Final at Westonbirt last Sunday.

Because of the success of the Junior Section over the last few years the Club has been designated a ‘Large’ club and competed in the Major Trophy competition.

Seven of our Juniors made the journey to the Cotswolds to compete in the complex network of paths, rides, and public spaces.

JOG Autumn 2021

OK, so our plans have gone a bit out of the window because Forestry England has raised its fees and now treats juniors as full adults in their pricing structure. This happening so late in the permissions process has meant that we have had to make some difficult decisions.

We fundamentally believe that JOG events should be run as cheaply as possibly, and have always subsidised them from income from bigger events. We cannot achieve that under the new charging regime so have done our best to restructure the already-planned series to enable it to go ahead.

Some events will have physical controls as usual. Some will have to be conducted using GPS controls as we did during COVID restrictions. And some might have some courses one and some the other.

Yvette Baker Result

QO Juniors entered a team of 12 juniors into the Preliminary Round of the Yvette Baker Trophy competition on Sunday at the Mike Nelson BOKTROT Regional Event in the Mendips. Their score of 878 points compared to the winners, Bristol Orienteering Klub, of 898 points reflect an excellent set of results in all the age groups. Many thanks to our Club Captain, Pete Shirvington for putting the team together and to the Juniors for their individual performances after such a long period without events.

Adrian Edwards at OMM

Adrian Edwards

Dear QO Members,

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Adrian Edwards, who has died aged 44 after a relatively short battle with cancer.

Adrian was not a frequent participant in Orienteering, instead preferring ultra-marathons to our ‘shorter’ events, but he enjoyed the camaraderie and banter, particularly of the summer relays.

His biggest contribution to QO perhaps came as editor for the club magazine, the QuOnicle. Adrian could effortlessly coerce event participants to write an event review or contribute technical training tips, often adding articles of his own and then collating the whole to create a rather magnificent and award-winning periodical.

Our thoughts are with his wife Alison and daughter Evie at this difficult time.

My MapRun Experiences

Our President shares some of his tips and tricks...

During lockdowns (and trying to keep to guidance to exercise from home) I have used the many opportunities to ‘virtual’ orienteer in Taunton, Somerset.

I use the latest version of the app MapRun6 with smartphone and either GPS or QR code punching, or a Garmin watch with GPS punching, to vary my options.
